Iyayi: Lagos Speaker tasks Federal Government on federal highways

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, has called on the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, transform all the nation’s federal highways that are in deplorable conditions as a means of checking the needless carnage that has continued to be recorded on such roads across the country.
Ikuforiji, who was reacting to the untimely death of the former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Festus Iyayi, who was killed in a ghastly auto crash on Tuesday, described the incident as one that could have been avoided.

According to the Speaker, who spoke through a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Adebayo, “the sad news of the loss of this great and illustrious Nigerian patriot, at a time when he was making strenuous efforts at resolving the protracted four-month old strike, is very sad indeed.
“It is also most unfortunate that Prof. Iyayi, who had devoted his entire life to the total transformation of our nation’s universities has had to meet his end in an avoidable road crash, while on his way to Kano for the resolution of the lingering four-month old ASUU strike. It is not only painful, but also highly ironic.
“Though death is something that will come when it will come, we as humans have been immensely endowed by the Almighty God to take certain precautions in order to be able to check certain calamities from befalling us. And this is why everything possible must be done now by the Federal Government of Nigeria to transform all our federal highways that have been turned into death traps for so long,” he stated.
While commiserating with the family of the deceased, especially ASUU, Ikuforiji maintained that for such a selfless, highly patriotic, cerebral, dedicated and most courageous university teacher and union leader to have died in such most unfortunate and preventable circumstance is something that brings pains to everyone’s heart, and tears to the people’s eyes.
“This is why we commiserate with the government and people of Edo State, the national executive and all members of the ASUU, and his grieving family members. We pray that the Almighty God grant the departed patriotic soul of Dr. Festus Iyayi eternal bliss. May He also grant all members of his family the fortitude to bear this sad and irreparable loss,” the statement added.
